It will soon be a lot easier to keep to the speed limit while driving with Google Maps on iPhone, as a speedometer will appear on the screen for certain users.
The speedometer has been spotted by autoevolution and its readers in both the iOS and CarPlay versions of Google Maps. Unfortunately, no one has been able to take screenshots or photos of it yet.
Because this speedometer uses GPS data, it may be more accurate than your own car’s speedometer, and it’s more conveniently located when you want to check your route.
Some Android versions of Google Maps can already do this, but the arrival of the feature in the iOS and CarPlay editions of Google Maps is good news for Apple users, who can currently only see the speed limit for the current road while driving.
Speedometers in map apps: an inconsistent experience
If you’re not a fan of Google Maps but still want a speedometer in your navigation app, Waze offers iPhone and Android users the ability to get real-time speed information in a maps app.
Apple Maps, like Google Maps for most users, can only display speed limits. But thanks to iOS 18, Apple Maps becomes more useful when you’re outside of your car, with topographic maps, preset and custom walking routes, and more.
It’s unfortunate that the Google Maps speedometer is limited in availability for now. One user on Reddit claimed that he could only find the speedometer on one of the two iPhones he owns. But this will be a very welcome upgrade once it’s available on everyone’s device, though there’s no telling how long it will take for the feature to fully roll out.
With a Made by Google event coming up on August 13, Google may take a break from announcing the rumored Pixel 9 series and Pixel Watch 3 to briefly discuss updates to Google Maps and other popular apps.
