Tracking Beryl: Expected Impacts for Louisiana in the Coming Days
HAPPY SUNDAY TO YOU. NOW IT’S TIME FOR ANOTHER CHECK ON OUR FIRST WARNING WEATHER. BECAUSE TODAY IS AN IMPACT DAY. BUT DEREK AND I HAVE JUST BEEN SITTING HERE TALKING ABOUT ESSENCE FEST AND ALL THE FACTS, ALL THE GREAT THINGS THAT PEOPLE CAN ENJOY THIS WEEKEND. TODAY IS THE LAST DAY. YOU KNOW, IT’S JUST GONNA BE HOT OUT OUT. SO WE NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT WE STAY HYDRATED. AND YOU KNOW, WE’RE ALSO TALKING ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF SEEING SOME THUNDERSTORMS IF WE MOVE IN HERE NEXT WEEK. WATCH THE SATELLITE AND THE RADAR. IT’S DEFINITELY BEEN ON THE DRY SIDE IN THE PAST SIX HOURS. BUT IF YOU LOOK AT THE CLOUDS COMING FROM THE SOUTH TO THE NORTH, THEY’RE ACTUALLY RELATED TO TROPICAL STORM BERYL TO THE SOUTHWEST OF US, YOU CAN SEE THE RAIN BANDS GETTING ORGANIZED HERE AND MOVING CLOSER TO THE COAST. ALSO THE STORM IS STARTING TO SHOW SIGNS OF STRENGTH AS WE’RE ALSO SEEING SOME COOLER BOWLS OUT HERE WITH SOME OF THESE SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS, WHICH INDICATES THAT INTENSIFICATION IS TAKE PLACE. WE DO HAVE HURRICANE AND TROPICAL STORM WARNINGS IN EFFECT FOR THE COAST OF TEXAS AT THIS TIME. THE HURRICANE WARNINGS ARE MAINLY IN EFFECT NEAR THE COAST AND THE IMMEDIATE COAST, AND ALSO A LITTLE FURTHER OUT INLAND. WE HAVE THOSE TROPICAL STORM WARNINGS IN EFFECT HERE AS WELL. THE 4 O’CLOCK UPDATE FROM THE HURRICANE CENTER IS MOVING NORTHWEST AT 12 O’CLOCK. THE WINDS ARE 60 MILES AN HOUR, INCREASING TO 70 MILES AN HOUR AS WE GO TOWARDS THE TEXAS COAST THIS AFTERNOON. AND YOU CAN SEE IT MOVING NATIONWIDE TOWARDS THE TEXAS COAST AS A CATEGORY ONE HURRICANE, APPROACHING TONIGHT INTO TOMORROW OVERNIGHT INTO THE EARLY MORNING. AND THEN IT COULD WEAKEN DOWN TO A TROPICAL STORM AS WE GO INTO TOMORROW AFTERNOON. AND THEN IT’S JUST GOING TO BE A RAIN MAKER AS IT MOVES NORTHEAST. AND THEN EVENTUALLY DISSAPPEARS. THEN WE CAN SAY GOODBYE TO BERYL AS WE GO INTO MIDWEEK. HERE TEMPERATURES ARE IN THE MID 70S, ON THE NORTH COAST, LOW 80S CLOSER TO THE METRO AND THE SOUTH COAST IN GENERAL, AND OUR HIGH NUMBERS TODAY GOING INTO THE LOW TO MID 90S. AND KEEP IN MIND, IT’S GOING TO FEEL EVEN HOTTER THAN THAT IF YOU TAKE IN THE RELATIVE HUMIDITY. SO WE HAVE THAT HEAT ADVISORY IN EFFECT FOR PORTIONS OF SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA, PARTICULARLY THE NORTH COAST. ALSO FOR PORTIONS OF THE SOUTH COAST, INCLUDING THE METRO HERE UNTIL 7:00. TONIGHT. AND TODAY YOU CAN SEE HEAT INDEX READINGS THAT ARE WELL INTO THE TRIPLE DIGITS. IN FACT IT’S 107 IN A LOT OF PLACES HERE TODAY AND TOMORROW AFTERNOON, VERY, VERY SIMILAR NUMBERS AS HIGHLIGHTS OR HEAT INDEX READINGS WILL RISE TO AROUND 105 TO 106. IN SOME PLACES. OK. LET’S GO THROUGH THE DAY. OVERALL, OTHER THAN THE HEAT, IT’S GOING TO REMAIN DRY HERE THIS AFTERNOON. I WANT TO TAKE YOU OUT TOMORROW AND BROAD THE PICTURE, BECAUSE AS BERYL CONTINUES TO MOVE OVER TEXAS AND THEN STARTS TO MOVE A BIT TO THE NORTHEAST, WE’RE GOING TO LOOK AT SOME OF THE EXTREME OUTER EDGES OF THE RAIN BANDS MOVING INTO SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA. THERE, AS WE MOVE OUT TOMORROW AFTERNOON AND MONDAY AND TUESDAY, WE’RE GOING TO SEE THAT BACKFLOW FROM THE WAVE, WHICH ALSO HELPED PUMP IN THE MOISTURE THAT’S BONDING THE BARRELS. SO WE COULD BE LOOKING AT SOME RAIN CHANCES MONDAY AND TUESDAY IN ASSOCIATED WITH THAT SYSTEM AS IT STARTS TO MOVE OUT. WDSU FIRST WARNING SEVEN DAY FORECAST SHOWING THAT WE’RE GOING TO HAVE HIGH TEMPERATURES IN THE LOW TO MID 90S WITH LOW TEMPERATURES IN THE 70S TO LOW 80S AND OVERALL THE CHANCES OF RAIN LOOK PRETTY SMALL, EXCEPT FOR TUESDAY, WHICH IS PROBABLY THE BEST WARNING FOR RAIN CHANCES. BUT OTHER THAN THAT, THINGS
Tracking Beryl: Expected Impacts for Louisiana in the Coming Days
Beryl is currently on track for the central coast of Texas. Southeast Louisiana will not be directly impacted by the storm, but should start to feel some external effects early this week. Based on the latest forecast from the National Hurricane Center, Beryl is expected to make landfall early Monday morning somewhere along the central coast of Texas between Corpus Christi and Galveston as a Category 1 hurricane. Later Monday and Tuesday, it will turn more to the northeast. As it does so, the tail end of the system could produce showers and thunderstorms across southeast Louisiana, as shown below. During this time on Monday and Tuesday, not only will rain chances increase, but there could also be coastal impacts due to strong onshore Gulf currents. This could lead to some minor coastal flooding and windy conditions. WDSU’s First Warning Weather team will continue to monitor this storm.
